The Pathology peer group

We have created a new pathology peer group to help trusts identify and compare their productivity with similar trusts.

The 2016/17 pathology data refresh included, for the first time, joint ventures between trusts. This meant we needed to disable the other pre-selected peer lists (such as CQC rating and region) for the pathology compartment, because they are based on lists of trusts which do not include the joint venture organisations.

Instead, we have developed a new pathology-specific peer list to help trusts identify trusts with a similar pathology FTE (full time equivalent) headcount.

The peer groups are:

  • all trusts with a pathology FTE headcount of <100
  • all trusts with a pathology FTE headcount of  >99 and <150
  • all trusts with a pathology FTE headcount of >149 and <200
  • all trusts with a pathology FTE headcount of >199 and <250
  • all trusts with a pathology FTE headcount of >249 and <400
  • all trusts with a pathology FTE headcount of >399 and <700
  • all trusts with a pathology FTE headcount of >699

Two types of trust are not included in these peer groupings:

  • Specialist acute trusts (unless they form part of a joint venture). We have excluded these providers because of their unique nature.
  • Outsourced trusts (where a trust outsources its pathology provision to another trust). We have excluded these trusts from peer groupings because the basis for comparison, FTE headcount, could lead to inaccurate comparisons as the service is not performed in-house.
