Selection of medicines for the top 10 medicines list

NHS Improvement works with or consults a number of stakeholders when developing the list of top 10 medicines, including Regional Medicines Optimisation Committees, NHS England, the Department of Health and Social Care, and NICE.

The top 10 medicines are chosen on the basis of:

    • formulation
    • other
  • Impact on patient safety
  • Perceived ease of implementation
  • Opportunity to improve patient experience and outcomes
  • Link to value for the NHS, in particular unwarranted price growth
  • Reduction of unwarranted variation across providers
    • Opportunity to drive maximal adoption of cost-effective alternatives
