Whether different information is provided compared to acute trusts
You can use the Model Mental Health Trust and Model Community Health Trust to review your trust’s workforce figures with specific reference to nursing, health care support workers and allied health professionals.
Workforce and temporary staffing information is available regardless of your trust’s sector (mental health, community health or acute).
Workforce metrics include whole time equivalent (WTE) staff numbers, care hours per patient day (CHPPD), sickness and staff turnover rates.
When reviewing workforce data, it’s also useful to understand your trust’s use of temporary staffing. Details of bank and agency staff can be found within the Temporary Staffing section.
Data sources
Currently, inpatients metrics on the Model Mental Health Trust and Model Community Health Trust are focused around workforce and temporary staffing. They use data from various sources including ESR (Electronic Staff Record), Safe Staffing (SDCS – Strategic Data Collection Service) monthly data and NHS Improvement monthly finance returns. Details of source data for each metric can be found on the individual metric information pages.
Future developments
In future the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS) and other national collections will be used to extend specific metrics and create an inpatients section, with metrics about the delivery of inpatient services. These might include length of stay, re-admission rates, delayed discharges, and out-of-area placements.
