Using the Model Health System to improve Orthopaedic Surgery services

The Model Health System and the Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT) teams are working closely together to provide up to date, meaningful metrics in the Orthopaedic Surgery area of the Model Health System.

For all available metrics around fractures, infections, joint replacements and soft tissue conditions, just go to the Acute Hospital Services area on the home page and click on Orthopaedic Surgery.

You can drill down into your organisation’s activity and productivity, staff numbers and costs, day cases and readmission rates. Within the GIRFT Clinical Metrics area, you will find information around hip and knee replacements, shoulder, hand, wrist and foot procedures. You can see how long patients are staying in hospital, as well as how many hip replacements have been performed and what percentage of emergency readmissions happened within 30, 60 or even 90 days.

Importantly, you can see how your services are recovering after COVID-19.

All this information is available to view at your trust and your system level. You can compare your organisation with others nationally, and within your peer group. From this, you might identify areas for potential improvement. Maybe one of your peer organisations has less readmission rates? How are they achieving this? What are they doing differently? Could your organisation learn from them?

And the great news is, you can export the data into an excel or PDF file, so you have all the data to hand.

This short spotlight film shows you the data available, where you’ll find it and how to interpret it.

Why not log in to the Model Health System and see how your organisation is performing?

There are also some great Orthopaedic resources, including pathways, reports and case studies in the GIRFT Best Practice Library. Just go to their website, and request access from the home page.
